Silvestre Mejia Jr., a 30-year-old man from Chicago, IL, was pronounced dead at 12:58 p.m. on July 11, 2016, at Mount Sinai Hospital. Mejia, who was of Hispanic descent, was shot on July 4, 2016, in the 2300 block of South Sawyer Avenue. The shooting occurred on his birthday, adding a tragic layer to the incident. Despite efforts to save him, Mejia succumbed to his injuries a week later.
