The event occurred around 12:20 a.m. in the 800-block of West 50th Place, where approximately 100 individuals had gathered for a block party commemorating a man who had been killed in a gang-related shooting in 2012.
The celebration took a fatal turn following a dispute over a curbside parking spot.
According to reports, two women were reserving a parking space for a friend who was circling the block. An argument ensued when 25-year-old Denzel Childs confronted them, leading to a confrontation. Childs allegedly drew a firearm and began shooting. In the ensuing chaos, an unidentified individual approached Childs and fired multiple shots, resulting in his death. Kayana Armond was struck in the neck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other women, aged 21 and 25, sustained gunshot wounds but survived the incident.
The violence had further repercussions. Jessica Williams, a 16-year-old present at the party, witnessed the shooting and suffered a severe asthma attack, leading to her death shortly thereafter. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled her death a homicide, citing bronchial asthma exacerbated by the stress of witnessing the gunfire.
In the aftermath, authorities noted that both Childs and the 25-year-old injured woman were documented gang members. The investigation faced challenges due to a lack of cooperation from witnesses. As of the latest available reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shootings, and the identity of the individual who shot Childs remained unknown.
