On August 8, 2016, Anthony Hatchett, a 44-year-old African American man from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot in the head while standing on the sidewalk in the 9400-block of South LaSalle Street in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side. The incident occurred at approximately 11:17 p.m. Hatchett was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. the following day.
He resided in the 10600 block of South Parnell Avenue.
During the same shooting, two other individuals were critically injured. A 28-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the back and was also taken to Christ Medical Center, while a 30-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm and left leg and was transported to Stroger Hospital. Both men were reported to be in critical condition.
The assailant fired from a blue car that drove past the victims before someone inside opened fire. As of the latest available reports, no arrests had been made, and the Chicago Police Department had not released information regarding any suspects in connection with the shooting.
This tragic event was part of a particularly violent period in Chicago. In August 2016, the city experienced its bloodiest month in two decades, with 90 murders, 384 shootings, and 472 shooting victims reported citywide. The violence disproportionately affected certain communities, particularly on the South and West Sides.
