Sydney Caldwell, a 26-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on July 26, 2017, in the West Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Caldwell was fatally shot while sitting in his car, parked in an alley off the 4700 block of West Maypole. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when Demarcus Simmons, a 20-year-old male, approached Caldwell's vehicle and fired multiple shots at close range into the driver's side.
Caldwell was found slumped over the wheel, bleeding profusely. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead approximately half an hour later at Stroger Hospital. An autopsy revealed that Caldwell had been struck by eight bullets.
The investigation into Caldwell's death led to the arrest of Demarcus Simmons, who was already in custody on an unrelated attempted murder charge.
