Michael Overall, a 23-year-old African American male, was found shot in his car in Chicago Heights, IL, on November 11, 2017. At approximately 4:16 a.m., officers discovered Overall in the driver's seat of a blue Chevrolet Impala with a gunshot wound to the head. He was initially taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights and later airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m. that same day. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation revealed that Overall was shot through an open car window while driving out of the parking lot at Gyro Express, located at 1814 Chicago Road. Witnesses reported that Trevor Keith, an 18-year-old male from Park Forest, approached Overall's car and fired a single shot from a 9mm handgun. Keith was arrested the following day after police found him hiding in a trailer home in Lynwood, IL. Two firearms, including the 9mm handgun used in the shooting, were recovered from the scene.
Keith was charged with first-degree murder and appeared in bond court at the Markham Courthouse, where he was denied bail. Prosecutors indicated that the shooting was gang-related, with Keith allegedly asking a witness about Overall's gang affiliation before the incident. Video footage from the restaurant and parking lot captured Keith's actions leading up to the shooting, showing a noticeable change in his body language when Overall entered the establishment.
The courtroom where Keith appeared was cleared after spectators, including family members of both the victim and the defendant, began yelling at Keith. Additional sheriff's deputies were called to manage the situation, resulting in one deputy deploying spray to disperse the crowd. Keith's extensive criminal history, including a previous juvenile detention for a 2016 conviction, was highlighted during the proceedings. He was scheduled to return to court on December 6, 2017, to face the charges against him.
