Arshad Vahora, a 19-year-old male of South Asian descent, tragically lost his life on December 28, 2017, during an attempted armed robbery at the Clark gas station in Dolton, Illinois. Arshad was working at his father's business when the incident occurred. The robbery attempt resulted in Arshad being fatally shot, while his co-worker, Syed Baquar Hussain, a 55-year-old male, was critically injured but survived after being taken to Christ Hospital.
The Dolton police received a 911 call from the gas station, but the caller was unable to speak. Upon arrival, officers found both victims unresponsive. Surveillance footage and witness accounts indicated that the assailants entered the gas station, opened fire, and fled the scene on foot. The investigation led to the arrest of Derrick Fils, a 45-year-old male, who was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Arshad Vahora and attempted murder in the shooting of Syed Baquar Hussain. Fils turned himself in on an arrest warrant. Two other suspects, Julian Upshaw, a 21-year-old male, and Eric Brewer, a 45-year-old male, were also implicated in the crime. Both were charged with first-degree murder and were considered armed and dangerous. Brewer was later arrested in Gary, Indiana, by the FBI Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Brewer was the driver of a silver pickup truck seen dropping off Upshaw just before the shooting. Phone records showed close communication between Brewer and Fils around the time of the incident. Upshaw, who entered the gas station wearing a mask, opened fire during the attempted robbery, resulting in the fatal shooting of Arshad Vahora. The suspects' actions were described as heinous and senseless by Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins.
The case garnered significant attention, with a $12,000 reward offered for information leading to a conviction. The community and law enforcement officials expressed their determination to bring all involved to justice. The legal proceedings against the suspects continued, with Brewer and Upshaw held without bail, reflecting the severity of their alleged crimes.
