On February 22, 2018, 25-year-old Hispanic male Sergio Quiroz and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Danielle Son, were found dead in Blackhawk Park in Rockford, Illinois. Both had been reported missing days earlier, prompting a police investigation. Danielle Son's family had not heard from her since February 17 and discovered her two young children, aged 11 months and 2 years, alone but unharmed in her home. This led authorities to suspect foul play.
The primary suspect was Danielle Son's estranged husband, 26-year-old Hand Son. On February 21, a warrant was issued for his arrest on two counts of kidnapping. Early the next morning, police located his vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Hand Son fled, leading to a low-speed chase that ended when his car overturned after hitting a mound of snow. As officers approached, they heard a single gunshot and found Hand Son with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital where he later died.
Following the crash, investigators discovered the bodies of Sergio Quiroz and Danielle Son in Blackhawk Park. Autopsies confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds. The case was classified as a double homicide, with Hand Son as the primary suspect.
Further investigation led to charges against four individuals connected to the case. Hsa Kler Htoo was charged with two counts of concealment of a homicidal death and one count of obstruction of justice. Eh T. Blay, Thee Da Cho, and Naw Naw were each charged with one count of obstruction of justice. All four were taken into custody at the Winnebago County Jail.
