Omar Campuzano, a 25-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on May 22, 2018, in a violent shootout at a gas station in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. at the Shell service station located at 3001 West Belmont Avenue. According to police reports, two groups arrived at the gas station in separate vehicles—a Nissan Pathfinder and a Honda.
An argument ensued between the occupants of the two cars, escalating quickly into a physical altercation. Subsequently, individuals from both groups drew firearms and began exchanging gunfire. Omar Campuzano, who was in the Nissan, was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He resided in the 3100 block of North Drake Avenue.
The shootout also resulted in severe injuries to three other individuals. A 24-year-old woman was critically injured after being shot in the neck and was taken to Stroger Hospital. Two men, aged 20 and 37, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were listed in serious condition at both Masonic and Stroger hospitals. A woman who was present at the scene but not injured was questioned by the police. Authorities recovered two firearms from the scene and reviewed surveillance footage as part of their investigation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials pursued leads to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence. In December 2018, a Cook County judge issued an arrest warrant for Angel Concepcion, a man with a lengthy criminal history, in connection with the shootout. Concepcion, who had been in custody in New Jersey on unrelated charges, was extradited to Chicago to face multiple charges related to the incident. These charges included 17 felonies, among them 11 counts of attempted murder. Concepcion's criminal record revealed a history of violent offenses, including previous charges of murder and attempted murder dating back to 2001. He was detained pending trial by Judge William Fahy.
