Israel Villegas, who was already under electronic monitoring for a previous weapons charge, was apprehended shortly after the shooting. Witnesses identified him as the gunman, and he was found attempting to hide a semi-automatic gun and a significant amount of cannabis in a neighboring yard. Villegas was charged with first-degree murder and is currently in custody at Cook County Jail. His bond was revoked, and he was denied bail during a hearing in Maywood.
