Za’Shawn Alexander Sylva Coats, a 15-year-old African American male from Rockford, Illinois, tragically lost his life on January 21, 2019. Born on July 18, 2003, Za’Shawn was a sophomore at Jefferson High School and was known for his fun and loving nature. He was walking with friends in the area of Kent and Ferguson Streets when he was approached by 27-year-old Juan Mora. Mora, suspecting the boys of being members of the Latin Kings gang, asked them about their gang affiliation.
When they denied any involvement, Mora fired two shots in their direction, one of which struck Za’Shawn, causing his death.
The investigation into Za’Shawn's death revealed that the shooting was gang-related. Rockford Police, with the help of community members and video surveillance, identified Juan Mora as the shooter. Mora was arrested on January 25, 2019, just days after the incident. The bravery of witnesses who came forward played a crucial role in the investigation and subsequent prosecution.
In May 2021, Juan Mora was found guilty of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. The court proceedings highlighted the senseless nature of the crime, emphasizing the impact of gang violence on the community. Mora was sentenced to 65 years in prison, with 55 years for the murder and an additional 10 years for the firearm charges. This sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to gang-related violence and to provide some measure of justice for Za’Shawn's family and friends.
