Angel Jesus Miranda, a 33-year-old Hispanic male from Chicago, was tragically killed on March 8, 2019, in Evanston, Illinois. Miranda was shot seven times in the upper torso in what police have described as a homicide and "not a random act." The incident occurred near William H. Twiggs Park, adjacent to the North Shore Canal on Evanston's western edge. Miranda had been visiting friends in Evanston when his body was discovered in the backyard of a multi-unit residential building.
His friends found him after noticing his car parked near the home and deciding to look for him. Police responded to the scene at approximately 9:35 p.m. and estimated the time of Miranda's death to be around 8 p.m.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was not gang-related. Police received calls of shots fired in the general neighborhood about 90 minutes before Miranda's body was found. Despite speaking to multiple individuals who heard the gunshots, no witnesses have been identified. The Evanston Police Department and the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force were involved in the investigation.
Further developments in the case led to the arrest of Sandoval Noe Cobian, a 38-year-old Navy veteran from Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood. Cobian was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The investigation uncovered that Cobian had been romantically involved with Miranda's girlfriend, leading to a fatal confrontation driven by jealousy and romantic rivalry. Cobian allegedly shot Miranda multiple times in the chest and abdomen behind a home on Simpson Street. Miranda's girlfriend found him wounded and called for help. Cobian was scheduled to appear at a bail hearing in Skokie following his arrest.
