Charlie Fuller, an 86-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, was gravely injured after a brutal attack outside his home on Carver Avenue on the morning of May 13, 2015, and he died from those injuries at UAB Hospital on May 25, 2015. The accounts that emerged in the days after the assault painted a painfully ordinary beginning to the morning. Fuller had stepped outside to feed his dogs, something so routine it would not have seemed worth a second thought. But when he did not return, alarm set in. A neighbor who noticed one of the dogs roaming loose brought the animal back and found Fuller in or near his garage, badly hurt with severe trauma to his head.
Police were called to what was first treated as a robbery-related assault, and from the beginning investigators believed he had been targeted during an apparent robbery attempt. Reports from Birmingham police and local news described the attack as especially shocking to neighbors because it happened in the safety of his own yard, in broad daylight, and to an elderly man who was known in the community. Fuller was rushed to the hospital and lingered for nearly two weeks before succumbing to his injuries, turning the case from a violent assault into a homicide investigation.
