Devondrey Exavious Cummings, a 26-year-old African American male, was tragically shot to death on January 2, 2020, in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. Officers responded to gunfire around 1:40 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Michigan Avenue and found Cummings with 11 gunshot wounds. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into Cummings' death revealed that he was a victim of a catfishing scheme. Keon Rodgers, a 19-year-old male, was charged with first-degree murder for killing Cummings. Rodgers allegedly used photos of his ex-girlfriend to create a fake social media profile and lured Cummings to an alleyway under the pretense of a sexual encounter. When Cummings arrived, he was ambushed and fatally shot by Rodgers and two teenage accomplices. Rodgers was arrested and held on a $1 million bond.
The case against Rodgers was built on several pieces of evidence, including eyewitness testimony and social media activity. An eyewitness recognized Rodgers, which led investigators to examine his Facebook posts. Rodgers had posted a photo of himself with the other suspects on the day of the murder, wearing the same clothing seen on the shooters in surveillance footage. Additionally, there were messages between Cummings and the person behind the fake profile discussing the meetup. Rodgers denied shooting Cummings, claiming he acted only as a lookout for the two teens.
