Johnny Zolicoffer, a 43-year-old Black male, was shot in the predawn hours of Father's Day weekend while standing along the 1200 block of South Farrar Drive on the northern edge of Douglass Park in Chicago's North Lawndale community. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found him unresponsive with wounds to the neck, upper thigh, and back. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
Zolicoffer, who lived on the West Side in the Austin neighborhood, died at the hospital ten days later—on Tuesday, June 30, 2020—after the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
The shooting came amid a surge of violence over that Father's Day weekend, when more than a hundred people were shot across the city. Zolicoffer's case added to the grim tally from those days and deepened the sense of loss felt on the West Side. The place where he fell—Farrar Drive curling through the green of Douglass Park—was quiet by the time police arrived, the scene offering little to explain the sudden burst of gunfire that had torn through the early morning.
