Quincy Ferguson Jr., a 28-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on August 2, 2020, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. Officers responding to ShotSpotter notifications of gunfire found Quincy Ferguson Jr. and another 28-year-old male, Darren Sims, unresponsive with gunshot wounds in the 2300 block of South Kolin Avenue.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victims as Quincy Ferguson Jr. of North Chicago and Darren Sims of Lawndale. The investigation revealed that the two men were inside a white Chevrolet Cruze when a blue Volkswagen Touareg circled the block and passed them twice. The Volkswagen then parked close to a nearby alley before two suspects got out and approached the Chevrolet. The suspects opened the door and fired at least 27 shots with two separate .40-caliber handguns, killing both men.
Ladelle Carpenter, a 24-year-old male from Austin on the West Side, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to the shooting. Private surveillance cameras recorded the Volkswagen circling the block and the shooters approaching the Chevrolet. Investigators found that the Volkswagen’s license plate was registered to Carpenter, leading to his arrest at his home. Carpenter later identified himself and the Volkswagen in stills from the video.
The case against Ladelle Carpenter is ongoing, with Carpenter being held without bail. He is due in court again on August 24, 2020. The investigation into the murder of Quincy Ferguson Jr. and Darren Sims continues as authorities seek to bring justice to the victims and their families.
