Deshawn McKinney, a 32-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on October 24, 2020, in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side of Chicago. McKinney was sitting in a car in the 11400 block of South Calumet Avenue when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, striking him multiple times, including in the back of the head. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation into McKinney's death revealed that he was in the passenger seat of a 2016 black Chevrolet Equinox at the time of the shooting. A woman who had been driving the vehicle was getting out when someone inside a southbound black Jeep SRT fired the fatal shots. The Jeep, which had blacked-out wheels, tinted windows, and was missing a front license plate, was last seen fleeing the scene. Chicago police released a photo of the Jeep and issued a community alert, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Despite the efforts of Area Two detectives, no arrests have been made in connection with McKinney's murder. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to seek leads and information from the public. The case highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the challenges faced by law enforcement in solving such crimes.
