Malachi Kyier Williams, a 17-year-old African American male from Springfield, Illinois, tragically lost his life on February 20, 2021, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. Born on August 31, 2003, Malachi was a senior at Lanphier High School, where he was known for his love of basketball, video games, and spending time with friends and family. His untimely death has left a profound impact on his community and family, who remember him for his vibrant personality and love for life.
The events leading to Malachi's death unfolded on February 18, 2021, when he was shot in the 2200 block of East Enterprise Street in Grandview, a suburb of Springfield. Malachi was one of two 17-year-olds shot in this incident. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Malachi succumbed to his injuries two days later. The other victim, also a 17-year-old, survived but sustained life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into Malachi's death quickly led to the arrest of 16-year-old Nazsier T. Robinson. Robinson was apprehended at the scene and subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. Due to the severity of the charges, Robinson was tried as an adult and faced the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted.
