Demarcus Ferrell, a 25-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 22, 2021, in Peoria, Illinois. Ferrell was a quiet and respected individual who had recently moved back to the area to be with his son. He was remembered by his former teacher, Jane Kresl, as a humble and sweet person who never showed anger. On the day of his death, Ferrell and another man were shot multiple times at a residence on West Willcox Avenue. The Peoria County Coroner, Jamie Harwood, confirmed that Ferrell died instantly from multiple gunshot wounds to his extremities and torso.
The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. when police responded to an alert from the ShotSpotter gunfire-detection system. Upon arrival, officers found two unresponsive men with multiple gunshot wounds inside the residence. The other victim, who was not publicly identified, was in critical condition. Despite the efforts of the police, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
Ferrell's death marked the sixth homicide in Peoria for the year 2021. The community mourned the loss of a good father and a role model for his younger cousins. A GoFundMe fundraiser was set up to support Ferrell's family during this difficult time. The Peoria Police Department continues to seek information from the public to aid in their investigation.
