Alter E. Ivy II, a 17-year-old male from Taylorville, Illinois, tragically passed away on May 27, 2021. The incident occurred during a dispute involving approximately 30 to 35 young adults and minors near Taylorville's town square. During the altercation, Ivy sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Taylorville Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. that evening.
The investigation into Ivy's death led to the arrest of Richard Klekamp, a 19-year-old male from Taylorville. Klekamp was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. According to Taylorville Police Chief Dwayne Wheeler, Klekamp did not have a prior relationship with the victims and was not initially involved in the fight. He was reportedly driving by when he saw the altercation, got out of his vehicle, and fired two shots, one of which struck Ivy.
The legal proceedings following Ivy's death saw Klekamp pleading guilty to one count of second-degree murder. As part of a plea deal, the charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery were dropped. Klekamp agreed to a sentence cap of 15 years for the second-degree murder charge.
The community of Taylorville was deeply affected by this incident, marking the first homicide in the city in three years. Local authorities, including Taylorville Mayor Bruce Barry, emphasized that this was an isolated incident and assured residents of their commitment to maintaining safety in the area.
