Peter Lee Jackson Jr., a 20-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on September 5, 2021, in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. when Jackson was inside a vehicle parked in the 7800 block of South Clyde Avenue. According to the Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Jackson suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was one of six individuals killed in gun violence in Chicago over the Labor Day holiday weekend, during which at least 50 others were wounded.
The investigation into Jackson's death revealed that he was involved in an illegal gun sale at the time of the shooting. Surveillance footage captured the events leading up to the incident, showing Jackson meeting with 19-year-old Daveon Houston in a nearby alley. The footage depicted Jackson opening a bag containing a firearm and ammunition, which Houston then inspected and placed in his waistband. The two men subsequently returned to Jackson's red Ford Focus, where Jackson got into the front seat and Houston into the rear passenger seat.
The surveillance video, although grainy, showed Houston raising his hand behind Jackson's head inside the car, followed by the sound of two gunshots. Jackson's head was seen slumping forward, indicating he had been shot. Houston then moved to the driver's seat, appeared to search Jackson's body, and fled the scene. Chicago police officers later found Jackson with two gunshot wounds to the head and recovered two 9-mm shell casings from the vehicle.
Following the incident, investigators obtained a search warrant for Houston's apartment, where they discovered a 9-mm handgun matching the shell casings found at the crime scene, as well as a .40-caliber handgun. Houston was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. During questioning, Houston admitted to being present at the scene and identified himself in the surveillance footage. He claimed that he believed Jackson was going to rob him, which led to the fatal shooting.
The case against Houston proceeded through the legal system, with prosecutors presenting evidence from the surveillance footage and text messages exchanged between Jackson and Houston. The text messages indicated that Jackson was selling the firearm and ammunition to Houston, who intended to pay for the items via Apple Pay. However, Houston claimed that technical issues with his phone prevented the transaction from being completed, leading to the confrontation and subsequent shooting.
