Marcell Wilson, a 12-year-old African American boy from Chicago, IL, tragically lost his life on January 2, 2022. The incident occurred in the Englewood neighborhood on the city's south side. Marcell was sitting on his bed in a back bedroom of his home, playing video games with his 13-year-old sister, when he was shot in the chest by someone he knew. The shooting happened around 11:25 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Aberdeen Street.
Despite being rushed to Comer Children's Hospital, Marcell succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that the shooter was Jaran Hughes, a 21-year-old man who had been staying with Marcell's older brother after being kicked out of his girlfriend's house earlier that day. Hughes, who was on a video call with his girlfriend at the time, was teased by Marcell about his girlfriend. This teasing led Hughes to point a gun at Marcell. Despite Marcell and his sister's pleas for Hughes to put the gun away, he racked the slide and fired a single shot, hitting Marcell in the chest. Marcell managed to run towards his mother's room, crying out that he had been shot, but collapsed before reaching her.
Hughes attempted to pick up the spent shell casing, a habit he reportedly had of collecting "trophies," but was unable to do so. He fled the scene, leaving behind personal items including his phone, jacket, and one shoe. Hughes was later apprehended in Racine, Wisconsin, where he had been staying with family members. Online conversations between Hughes and his girlfriend indicated his awareness of the gravity of his actions, as he expressed that his life was over and he would be going to jail.
Hughes was charged with first-degree murder and held without bond. The case against him included testimonies from witnesses who were present during the shooting, as well as evidence from his online communications. The tragic death of Marcell Wilson highlights the devastating impact of gun violence and the senseless loss of young lives in communities plagued by such incidents.
