Caleb Westbrooks, a 15-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on January 18, 2022, in the Noble Square neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Caleb was a freshman at Rauner College Prep, known for his infectious personality and constant smile. On the day of his death, Caleb had left school early and was walking with friends to meet others at a nearby school, Golder College Prep. As they walked, an 18-year-old student from Golder College Prep, Tremell D. Neloms, approached them. Neloms, who had initially tried to rob Caleb and his friends, ended up shooting Caleb multiple times in the abdomen, chest, and arm after a brief confrontation.
The incident occurred in the 800 block of North Greenview Avenue. Surveillance footage from Golder College Prep and private cameras captured the entire sequence of events, leading to Neloms' identification and subsequent arrest. He was apprehended by the Chicago Police Department and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force in Calumet City. Neloms was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail. The arrest brought some relief to Caleb's family, but as his father stated, it did not bring Caleb back to them.
Caleb's death was part of a broader pattern of gun violence affecting Chicago's youth. In 2021, the city saw a significant increase in juvenile shootings, with 421 juveniles shot, a 13% increase from the previous year. Caleb's school community was deeply affected by his death, with students and staff mourning the loss of a bright and joyful young man.
