According to Angela, she had picked Robert up from school and was driving to the laundromat when a car passed by and a single shot was fired into their vehicle.
The bullet hit Robert in the back, and despite Angela rushing him to the closest hospital, he did not survive.
Santos is remembered for his heroic actions in trying to shield his younger nieces and nephews from the gunfire. His sister described him as a teen who loved his family and took care of them until the very end. The family was in a car full of children when the shooting happened near 58th Street and Western Avenue in Gage Park.
As of the latest reports, police have not made any arrests in connection with Robert Santos' death. Angela believes that her brother was set up by someone he knew, although no specific suspects have been identified or charged. The family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses for Robert Santos.
