Ohleyer Jones, a 19-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on January 21, 2022, in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. when Jones was standing outside in the 9000 block of South Normal Avenue. He was shot multiple times in the legs and upper body. Despite being rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The investigation into Ohleyer Jones' death revealed a complex
plot involving his girlfriend, Akiya Sims, also 19 years old. Sims was arrested in Indianapolis and extradited to Chicago, where she was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. According to prosecutors, Sims and Jones were in a relationship, and the motive behind the shooting was a robbery plot orchestrated by Sims and Deon Evans, another 19-year-old who shares a child with Sims.
The day before the shooting, Evans had arranged for Sims and Jones to visit a friend's home, with the plan for Sims to steal Jones' gold chain. On the day of the incident, as Jones and Sims drove to the arranged location, a friend who was aware of the plot warned them to leave. However, Jones stopped his car on Normal Avenue, where a white SUV pulled up. Evans and another accomplice exited the SUV and fired multiple shots at Jones, hitting him six times. Sims, who was also in the car, suffered a gunshot wound to her leg. After the shooting, she got into the white SUV with Evans and the other gunman, who then fled the scene.
The entire incident was captured on surveillance video, and cell tower records placed Sims and Evans at the scene. Evans was later found in possession of the stolen gold chain, and the white SUV was registered to his mother. Both Sims and Evans were charged with first-degree murder, and Sims was held without bail following her court appearance.
