On that fateful afternoon, she was walking in the 200 block of East 35th Street when she was struck in the chest by a stray bullet. The incident occurred around 4 p.m.
as she was leaving a Chase Bank branch.
The shootout involved a security guard named Victor Brown, who was working at a nearby liquor store, and an unidentified gunman known only by the nickname "Renegade." The altercation began when the gunman fired at Brown, hitting him in the thigh. In response, Brown, who had a history of felony convictions, grabbed another guard's gun and fired back, discharging approximately 20 shots. Unfortunately, one of these bullets struck Bobbye Johnson, leading to her untimely death.
Victor Brown, 34, was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for his injury before being transferred to Cook County Jail. Brown's criminal record included previous convictions for domestic battery and armed robbery. Despite his claims of self-defense, he remains in custody on a $1 million bail.
