Francisco "Frankie" Zavala, a 26-year-old Hispanic male from Round Lake, Illinois, was found shot to death on March 3, 2022, in Pratt's Wayne Woods Forest Preserve in DuPage County. Zavala had been missing since January 29, 2022, when he was last seen being dropped off at a Metro by T-Mobile store in Round Lake by his mother. He intended to travel by train to Indiana to visit a woman. Surveillance footage confirmed that Zavala boarded a Metra train headed for Chicago on the morning of January 29. His family reported him missing on February 7 after they had not heard from him since his departure.
The investigation into Zavala's disappearance and subsequent death revealed that he had suspected gang affiliations. On March 3, 2022, a person from a nearby horse stable discovered Zavala's body in the forest preserve and alerted the authorities. The DuPage Forest Preserve District Police, along with the Metropolitan Emergency Response & Investigation Team (MERIT) and the DuPage County Coroner's Office, responded to the scene. Zavala's body was found less than 30 feet from the side of the road, with fresh tire tracks nearby. An autopsy confirmed that Zavala had been shot multiple times.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Francisco Maldonado, a 31-year-old Hispanic male from Round Lake Beach, Illinois. Maldonado was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Zavala's death. Prosecutors described the killing as a "brutal gang execution," stating that Zavala had been shot 11 times. Surveillance footage and cell phone data played a crucial role in linking Maldonado to the crime. Zavala's cell phone had been tracked to several locations, including Grayslake, Round Lake, Mundelein, Elgin, South Elgin, West Chicago, and Wayne, on the day of his disappearance.
During the investigation, authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in McHenry, Illinois, where they found a pickup truck linked to Zavala's murder. Additionally, they discovered a significant quantity of drugs and firearms at the location. Luis E. Rangel, a 28-year-old male from McHenry, was arrested and charged with multiple drug and firearm offenses. Although Rangel was not charged with Zavala's murder, his arrest was a result of the broader investigation into the case.
