Ronald L. Holland, a 40-year-old African American male from Jennings, Missouri, was tragically found dead on March 17, 2022, in the 2000 block of North Bluff Road, Collinsville, Illinois. The incident occurred within the municipal limits of Maryville, despite the Collinsville mailing address. Holland was discovered face down in a pool of blood, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The Maryville Police Department received a 911 call at approximately 4:05 p.m. reporting the gruesome scene. Due to the limited resources of the Maryville Police, the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated, bringing over 20 investigators to the case.
The investigation quickly identified Danyel M. Johnson, a 40-year-old African American male from St. Louis, Missouri, as a suspect. Johnson was charged on March 21, 2022, with two counts of first-degree murder, use of a stolen firearm in the commission of an offense, and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon. The charges included different theories of the crime, emphasizing the severity of the accusations. Johnson's bail was set at $2 million.
Authorities revealed that both Holland and Johnson were familiar with each other, although no criminal history between the two was found. The incident was described as a random occurrence, with both individuals merely passing through the area when the tragic event unfolded. Johnson allegedly acted alone and fled the scene after the shooting. Holland's car was later found abandoned in St. Louis, further complicating the investigation.
The Major Case Squad's involvement was crucial in making significant progress quickly. Johnson was apprehended by the Normandy Police Department and is currently in custody in St. Louis County. The case highlights the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies to bring justice to the victim and his family. Despite the swift arrest, the community remains shaken by the senseless act of violence that claimed the life of Ronald L. Holland.
