On October 26, 2022, seven-year-old Akeem Briscoe, an African American boy, was tragically killed by a stray bullet while inside his home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Akeem was washing his hands in the bathroom, preparing for bed, when a bullet pierced through the window and struck him in the stomach. The bullet was fired during a gang-related altercation in the alley behind his home.
Despite his mother's desperate attempts to stop the bleeding, Akeem succumbed to his injuries hours later at the hospital.
The investigation into Akeem's death led to multiple arrests. Initially, a 15-year-old boy was charged with murder in connection to the shooting. This teenager, who was later identified as being 16 at the time of his trial, was found guilty in a Cook County Juvenile Court. The court proceedings revealed that the teen did not fire the fatal shot but was in possession of the gun and handed it to an adult who did. The teen's conviction means he will be released when he turns 21, a fact that has caused significant distress to Akeem's family.
In addition to the teenager, two adults were also charged in connection with Akeem's death. Joseph Serrano, a 19-year-old, was one of the individuals charged with murder. However, charges against another 18-year-old suspect were later dropped by the state's attorney's office. The investigation revealed that the gunfire erupted between two groups in the alley, with the stray bullet intended for another target but tragically hitting Akeem instead.
The case drew significant attention from the community and local authorities, including Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who urged anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $15,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest. The incident highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and its devastating impact on innocent lives, particularly children. Akeem's death was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by residents in neighborhoods plagued by gang violence and the urgent need for effective measures to prevent such tragedies.
