Jose L. Navarro, a 47-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on July 10, 2018, in Chicago, IL. The incident occurred in the South Side Gage Park neighborhood, where Navarro was fatally shot and beaten. According to reports, Deshun Williams, 23, was charged with first-degree murder for shooting Navarro in the back of the neck at the base of his skull.
Additionally, Bobby Spears, 27, and Darius Weems, 26, were charged with aggravated battery for their involvement in the beating.
The events leading up to Navarro's death began when someone attempted to break into the home where Spears and Weems were staying. Spears fought off the intruder and called Williams for assistance. When Williams arrived, the trio spotted Navarro, who had family living nearby and used to reside in the area. They chased Navarro and, after catching him, began beating him. Williams then shot Navarro, and the three men returned to the home without calling the police.
Navarro was found lying in an alley by officers responding to a call of a person on the ground. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office listed Navarro's address as the 2400 block of West 24th Street in the Heart of Italy neighborhood.
During a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, Williams was ordered held at the Cook County Jail without bail, while bail for Spears and Weems was set at $10,000 each. Both Spears and Weems had no prior criminal background, and this was their first arrest.
