On November 19, 2022, Johnny R. McCline, a 13-year-old African American boy from Washington Park, Illinois, tragically lost his life in a drive-by shooting. Johnny was a seventh grader at Mason-Clark Middle School in East St. Louis. The incident occurred in the Washington Park community of St. Clair County, where Johnny and three other teens were targeted. While Johnny succumbed to his injuries, the other three teens survived, albeit with injuries.
The community was deeply affected by Johnny's death. His mother, Kysha Davis, described him as "the life of the party" and shared that he enjoyed playing football and making music videos. A vigil was held at the Roosevelt Homes public housing complex, where friends and family gathered to honor Johnny's memory with orange balloons, his favorite color, and candles spelling out his nickname, J9.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the East St. Louis School District 189 activated its Crisis Team to provide support to students and staff.
