Ashton was driving a vehicle in the area of Circle Drive East in Montgomery when he picked up two juvenile males. Brian Bell Jr., an 18-year-old male from DeKalb, was a front-seat passenger in Ashton's vehicle. During what appeared to be a drug deal, Bell attempted to rob Ashton at gunpoint. A struggle ensued between the two in the front seat, and the gun discharged, striking Ashton in the thigh. Despite his efforts to drive away, Ashton only managed to travel a few blocks before crashing the vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to the gunshot wound.
Following the incident, law enforcement quickly responded to the scene. Kendall County Sheriff's deputies spotted a suspicious person in the area and pursued them to a nearby house on Seneca Drive in Montgomery. Inside the house, they found the two juveniles and a handgun. Bell, who had fled the scene, was later apprehended after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The handgun used in the shooting was discovered under a shed in the backyard of the house where the juveniles were found.
Brian Bell Jr. was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Ashton's death. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Under Illinois law, Bell is required to serve his entire sentence and will be on mandatory supervised release for three years following his prison term. Additionally, he must register as a violent offender against youth.
