Alexander Whiteley, a 44-year-old White male deputy U.S. marshal, met his end on March 21, 1901, in Lincoln County, Georgia, when he and other officers went out to arrest a moonshiner. What should have been an enforcement action in the countryside turned into a deadly standoff. According to the surviving accounts, the suspect had shut himself inside his home and refused to surrender, turning the house into a fortress as the officers closed in.
