In the spring of 1979, the community of Glynn County, Georgia, was shaken by the sudden and tragic death of one of its own. Charles Lee Herrington Sr., a 30-year-old Deputy Sheriff with the Glynn County Sheriff's Office, was killed in the line of duty on April 17th of that year. He had been with the sheriff's office for three years, a time during which he dedicated himself to serving and protecting the citizens of his county.
On that fateful day, Deputy Herrington was tasked with serving divorce papers. It was a routine duty, one of many he had likely carried out before. However, this particular assignment took a fatal turn when he was shot in the back. The act of violence cut short the life of a dedicated lawman and left a community in mourning. In the immediate aftermath, the person responsible for his death remained at large, leaving a lingering sense of injustice.
For fourteen years, the case of Deputy Herrington's death remained unresolved. But in 1993, a breakthrough finally came. The individual responsible for the shooting was apprehended, bringing a long-awaited sense of closure to the slain deputy's family and colleagues. The suspect was subsequently sentenced to ten years in prison for voluntary manslaughter. After serving a portion of the sentence, the individual was released in 1999. Deputy Herrington is survived by his wife and four children.
