In the early morning hours of October 14, 1987, in Glynn County, Georgia, a 47-year-old male convenience store clerk named Don Anderson was shot and killed during a robbery at his place of work. The assailant, Jimmy Fletcher Meders, entered the store with two other men and proceeded to rob it. During the commission of the crime, Meders shot Anderson once in the chest and then again in the head after he had already fallen to the floor. The total amount stolen was less than $40.
Later that same day, authorities apprehended Meders as a suspect in the case. A search of his belongings revealed bait money that had been marked by the store's manager in his wallet. Furthermore, the weapon used in the murder was discovered under his bed. This evidence, combined with witness testimony, built a strong case against him.
In April of 1989, Jimmy Fletcher Meders was convicted of armed robbery and malice murder. He subsequently received a life sentence for the armed robbery and was sentenced to death for the murder of Don Anderson. Despite numerous appeals at both the state and federal levels, his conviction and death sentence were consistently upheld. After exhausting all of his legal appeals, an execution date was set for January 16, 2020.
