On November 27, 1980, in Douglas County, Georgia, 69-year-old J.L. Washington and his wife, Ruby Washington, also 69, were tragically murdered. On that Thanksgiving Day, witnesses observed James Mathis in the back seat of the Washingtons' vehicle as it navigated through their apartment complex. Subsequently, the couple's bodies were discovered in a wooded area; both had suffered severe beatings, multiple stab wounds, and gunshot injuries.
