In the winter of 1986, a tragic event unfolded in Colquitt County, Georgia, that ended the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer. Tony Reed Wilder, a 43-year-old male Deputy Sheriff, was killed in the line of duty on Friday, January 31, 1986. On that day, Deputy Wilder, along with several of his fellow deputies, was attempting to serve a committal warrant on a man.
The situation escalated quickly and violently when the suspect opened fire with a rifle, fatally wounding Deputy Wilder. The gunman did not cease his attack after shooting Wilder. He then armed himself with a shotgun and continued to fire, injuring three other deputies and two civilians who were present at the scene.
The exchange of gunfire ultimately resulted in the suspect being shot and killed at the scene, bringing the violent confrontation to an end. Deputy Wilder, a husband and father of three, succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family and a shaken community.
