In the early hours of a Friday in Kennesaw, Georgia, a tragic and senseless act of violence cut short the life of 21-year-old Kimberly 'Kimmie' Faith Kilgore. A student at Kennesaw State University, the young Caucasian woman was with her best friend when a road rage incident escalated into a fatal encounter on October 11, 2013. The initial dispute, which began on the road, carried over into the parking lot of the Shiloh Green Apartments.
There, a physical altercation between the occupants of two vehicles ensued, culminating in a single, fatal gunshot. Kilgore was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was later taken off life support.
The investigation quickly led police to 22-year-old Sparkles Lashayla Lindsey of Austell. She was arrested the day after the shooting and charged with murder and aggravated assault. Investigators determined that Lindsey and Kilgore did not know each other prior to the deadly confrontation. A Cobb County grand jury later indicted Lindsey on multiple counts, including malice murder, felony murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. It was revealed that at the time of the shooting, Lindsey was already on probation for a prior conviction and was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
In February 2015, just as jury selection for her trial was about to begin, Sparkles Lashayla Lindsey pleaded guilty to the murder of Kimberly Kilgore. In a plea deal that was accepted by Kilgore's family to avoid the emotional toll of a trial, Lindsey was sentenced to life in prison. She will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for a life ended far too soon, though for her family, the pain of their loss remains. Her mother expressed to the court that the sentence would not bring closure, stating, 'without her, life isn't be the same.'
