In the summer of 2014, a life was tragically cut short in the parking lot of a West Point, Georgia, liquor store. On the evening of June 28, Willis Bulger, a 29-year-old male, found himself in a heated argument with another man. The dispute quickly escalated to a point of no return, shattering the night's calm with the sound of a gunshot.
The man who fired the weapon was identified as Latrell Deshonta Harper, a 24-year-old from the neighboring town of Lanett, Alabama. In the wake of the confrontation, Bulger was grievously wounded. Emergency services rushed him to East Alabama Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them later that same night.
The investigation into Willis Bulger's death led to the swift arrest of Latrell Deshonta Harper. He was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one of which was specifically for possession by a first offender probationer. This last charge stemmed from a prior conviction in 2010 for another aggravated assault, where he had shot at an individual without causing injury.
Harper's case proceeded to trial in the Troup County Superior Court. On September 20, 2016, a jury found him guilty on all charges. The court later handed down a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, in addition to a consecutive ten-year sentence. This means Harper will have to serve a minimum of 40 years before he is eligible for release.
