In the quiet town of West Point, Georgia, the life of 65-year-old William Carter Lee, an African American male, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end on the night of December 18, 2017. Responding to a midnight call about a possible shooting, officers from the West Point Police Department arrived at his apartment located at 1303 Avenue K, Apt. B. Inside, they discovered a grim scene. Lee was found unresponsive on his couch, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen. Despite the immediate efforts of emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m.
The investigation into the violent death of William Carter Lee quickly gained momentum with the involvement of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, who were called in to process the crime scene. The evidence gathered pointed swiftly to a suspect. Just a few hours after the discovery of Lee's body, authorities apprehended 63-year-old Freddy Lee Sutton at the Town and Country Hotel in nearby LaGrange, Georgia.
Sutton was promptly charged with the murder of William Carter Lee. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. While the motive for the shooting was not immediately made public, the swiftness of the arrest suggested that investigators had a strong case against him.
