In the late hours of a Thursday evening in August 2014, the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the otherwise quiet neighborhood surrounding Collier Park in northwest Atlanta. The following morning, on August 15, 2014, a grim discovery was made. Willie Knighton, a 63-year-old African-American male, was found deceased inside his red Jeep Cherokee, which was parked near the park's playground.
The vehicle was riddled with bullets, a stark indication of the violence that had transpired.
Investigators arriving at the scene found multiple shell casings, suggesting that several shots had been fired from outside the vehicle. Neighbors recalled hearing between three and four gunshots a little after 11 p.m. the previous night, with one resident reporting seeing the Jeep but no individuals in the vicinity. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office later officially identified the victim. Mr. Knighton was a resident of Riverdale and an Army and Army National Guard veteran. Family members described him as someone who kept to himself and did not have any known enemies.
The investigation into Willie Knighton's death was launched swiftly, with Atlanta police canvassing the area for leads. A witness reported seeing a man and a woman sitting on a wall in the park shortly before the incident. This lead eventually led investigators to a woman who was in jail on a probation violation. She admitted to being with Knighton that evening and stated that after an argument, she called her boyfriend who allegedly intended to rob Knighton. She claimed to have heard gunshots as she walked away.
Based on this information, a SWAT team apprehended the woman's boyfriend at a local motel. During interrogation, the man denied his girlfriend's story, insisting he was at the motel the entire night and was never at the park. While he was arrested on unrelated drug charges, he was not charged with the murder of Willie Knighton. To date, the murder of Willie Knighton remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The Atlanta Police Department continues to ask for anyone with information to come forward.
