On the night of October 15, 2014, a burst of gunfire in the parking lot of an Atlanta apartment complex on Memorial Drive shattered the evening calm and ended the life of 30-year-old Michael Edwards. The male victim, a Black father of two young sons, was caught in an eruption of violence that also claimed the life of 37-year-old Derrick McGinty and left a third man wounded.
The attack, which occurred around 11 p.m., is believed by investigators to have stemmed from an argument, though
the specifics of the dispute remain unclear. Following the shooting, Michael Edwards was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing at least two shooters who quickly fled in a red vehicle, disappearing into the Atlanta night.
In the weeks and months that followed, the Atlanta Police Department worked to unravel the case, conducting a 'Tactical Neighborhood Canvass' in the area to uncover new leads. The families of both Edwards and McGinty made emotional public appeals for justice, grieving for the sons and fathers they had lost. The case even garnered national attention when it was featured on the A&E television series 'The First 48,' in the hopes that the broadcast would generate new tips from the public.
Despite these efforts and a reward offered by Crime Stoppers Atlanta for information leading to an arrest, the case has grown cold.
