In the winter of 2014, a promising life was tragically cut short in College Park, Georgia, over a dispute that began with childish innocence and ended in violence. Ryan Bolden, a 23-year-old male and a former first-round draft pick for the Los Angeles Angels, was visiting a friend at an apartment complex on Lakemont Drive on the evening of December 17th. What started as a simple argument among a group of children over candy quickly spiraled out of control as adults became involved in the disagreement.
The situation escalated when a friend's son reported being punched by another child. Bolden, along with the boy's father, went to address the situation, which resulted in the father also being struck. A short time later, as Bolden was sitting in his car, he was confronted by a man who would later be identified as 25-year-old Stacie Williams. Williams allegedly dragged Bolden from the vehicle and shot him multiple times in the chest. Despite his injuries, Bolden managed to fire his own weapon at the fleeing assailant before succumbing to his wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
In the days following the senseless act, authorities identified a suspect but did not immediately release his name to the public. The investigation led them to Stacie Williams, who was already incarcerated in the Fulton County jail on an unrelated domestic dispute charge. In early January 2015, Williams was served with an arrest warrant and charged with felony murder for the death of Ryan Bolden. He was held without bond. The community was left to grapple with the reality that a conflict over something as trivial as candy could lead to the death of a young man with a promising future.
