In College Park, Georgia, a chaotic street altercation on April 4, 2015, tragically ended the life of 15-year-old Pierre Tilson, an African American male. The fatal incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Godby Road, where a fight had broken out involving both juveniles and adults. Accounts suggest the conflict began after Pierre and his sisters were mistakenly accused by a group of people of making fun of one of their friends. Pierre defended his sisters and went to get his mother, 33-year-old Latoya Tilson.
Latoya Tilson emerged from her apartment to confront the group and was reportedly struck in the face during the escalating brawl. In response, she retrieved a. 25 caliber handgun and fired several shots into the crowd. One of these bullets tragically struck her son, Pierre, in the back of the head. Another teenager was also struck by a bullet but their injuries were not life-threatening. When police arrived, they found Pierre unconscious and not breathing. He was rushed to Grady Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later on April 6, 2015.
Latoya Tilson was arrested and initially charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault, reckless conduct, and cruelty to children. Following her son's death, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office upgraded the charges to second-degree murder. While incarcerated, authorities uncovered an alleged plot by Tilson to escape from jail during a potential visit to her son's viewing. In July 2016, a jury found Latoya Tilson guilty of involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment in the death of her son.
