In the winter of 2014, a life was tragically cut short in LaGrange, Georgia. Tarvanisha Benae Boyd, a 26-year-old female, was killed on Saturday, December 20, 2014, a victim of gun violence. Born on December 31, 1988, she was just shy of her 27th birthday. The incident that led to her untimely death unfolded at a party she was co-hosting with a friend.
During the gathering, a heated argument broke out between Boyd and another guest, Demario Goodrum. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. In the midst of the struggle, Goodrum pulled out a 9-millimeter handgun and shot Boyd in the chest. After the shooting, he fled the scene in his car. Boyd was rushed to the hospital, but she ultimately succumbed to the single gunshot wound.
Law enforcement later apprehended Demario Goodrum. He claimed that he saw someone hand Boyd a gun, but four eyewitnesses testified that no one else in the room was armed. In December 2015, a jury in the Superior Court of Troup County found Goodrum guilty of felony murder and other related offenses in connection with Boyd's death. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Goodrum later appealed his conviction, arguing that his right to be present at all critical stages of his trial was violated and that he had received ineffective legal counsel. However, the Georgia Supreme Court found no reversible error and affirmed the conviction in 2018.
