In a quiet Douglasville, Georgia, neighborhood, a domestic dispute on a warm Saturday afternoon in February 2015 escalated into a horrific act of violence that claimed the life of 9-year-old Jeremiah Prather. On February 7th, Jeremiah, his 7-year-old sister London, their mother Latoya A. Andrews, and her boyfriend Joseph Terry Brown, were all fatally shot by Jeremiah's father, 33-year-old Cedric G. Prather Jr., who then took his own life.
The events of that tragic day were reportedly triggered by a heated argument between Cedric Prather and Latoya Andrews concerning taxes and child support. Having been divorced for about five years, the couple's lingering disputes reached a deadly climax. That afternoon, Cedric Prather drove to his ex-wife's home on Willow Tree Circle, parked his car a short distance away, and approached the house on foot.
Inside the home, Prather first shot and killed Joseph Terry Brown. He then turned the gun on Latoya Andrews, shooting her in the master bedroom. The violence then spilled outside, where the children had reportedly fled after hearing the initial gunshots. Witnesses stated that Prather convinced the children to come back, at which point he reloaded his. 45-caliber handgun and opened fire on his own children in the street. Jeremiah and his younger sister London were both killed. A neighbor reported hearing one of the children pleading with their father, saying, 'Daddy no,' or 'Daddy don't,' before the fatal shots were fired.
In the midst of the rampage, Prather was on the phone with a friend, to whom he reportedly said, 'You don't wanna hear this.' After murdering four people, including two of his own children, Cedric Prather turned the gun on himself, ending his life in the street. The attack also left two other children critically injured: Andrews' 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and Brown's 7-year-old daughter. A 13-year-old son of Andrews and Prather was not home at the time of the shooting.
As the shooter died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, there were no arrests or a trial to follow. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident as a murder-suicide, concluding that Cedric Prather had 'snapped.' Authorities noted that there were no prior reports of domestic violence between the former couple.
