In a quiet southwest Atlanta neighborhood, the morning of February 14, 2015, was shattered by a brutal discovery that would leave a family and community searching for answers. Responding to a call just before 8:30 a.m., police entered a home on Mims Street to find brothers Ras Aole JaJa Peek, a 32-year-old male, and Marcus Peek, 37, shot to death inside. The brothers, who were Black, lived together in the residence where their lives were violently ended.
A neighbor later recounted hearing a series of six or seven gunshots at approximately 6 a.m., more than two hours before the men were found, suggesting the fatal attack occurred in the early morning hours. In a sad footnote to the violence, a dog was also discovered shot at the scene; it was transported to a veterinarian and was expected to survive the ordeal. While details about Ras Aole JaJa's life were not widely reported, his brother Marcus was a military veteran who had honorably served two tours in Iraq.
