In the summer of 2015, the life of Nathaniel Donald Brown, Jr., a 41-year-old man, was cut short in a fatal confrontation within a Hinesville, Georgia, residence. The events leading to his death began to unfold after a reported burglary at the home of Lisa Mealy, the wife of Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jermaine Mealy. Jermaine Mealy was away for military training in Texas at the time. Despite his wife's assurances that the police were handling the situation, Mealy embarked on a 900-mile journey back to his home on Waverly Court.
Upon his arrival on Saturday, June 6, 2015, Jermaine Mealy discovered Nathaniel Brown, a friend of his wife, inside the house. An altercation quickly erupted between the two men. The confrontation escalated tragically when Mealy produced a firearm and shot Brown multiple times. Emergency services were called, and Brown was rushed to Liberty Regional Medical Center, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Jermaine Mealy was arrested and initially charged with felony murder. The investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from Mealy finding Brown in his home, leading to the deadly fight. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in April 2018, Mealy pleaded not guilty. However, in a turn of events, before a jury trial could commence in July 2019, Mealy pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
The court sentenced Jermaine Mealy to 20 years of probation, with five years suspended, a fine, and a requirement to attend anger management classes. The resolution of the case brought a close to the legal proceedings, though the family of Nathaniel Brown expressed their disappointment, having hoped for a trial to learn more about the circumstances of his death.
