In the early evening of January 11, 2016, a burst of violence shattered the calm outside the Kissingbower Package Shop in Augusta, Georgia, leaving a family and community to grapple with a sudden and tragic loss. James J. Sims III, a 34-year-old African American male known to his friends as 'Mel,' was shot at least once in the torso at approximately 5:21 p.m. His death marked the first homicide of the year in the city, a grim milestone that would set in motion a prolonged quest for justice.
