In the late hours of a Wednesday in Savannah, Georgia, the life of 37-year-old James Lamara Johnson was tragically cut short. On February 17, 2016, in the 1300 block of Church Street, police responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 10:40 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Johnson deceased at the scene, a victim of gun violence.
The investigation into the homicide quickly focused on a suspect described as a thin, dark-skinned Black male, approximately 5'9' tall with a short haircut, believed to be in his late teens or early twenties. He was last seen wearing a gray jacket over a black long-sleeved shirt, fleeing east on Church Street.
Authorities publicly identified Romaine Rontrez Gray as a person of interest in the fatal shooting of Johnson. Following the release of his identity, Gray subsequently turned himself in to the police. The investigation continued as the Savannah community mourned the loss of James Lamara Johnson.
