In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Albany, Georgia, the life of 40-year-old Tony Carter was tragically cut short. On March 6, 2016, Carter was at the Apple Jax Bar and Lounge located at 1303 E. Broad Ave. At approximately 1:34 a.m., a single gunshot pierced the air, striking Carter in the upper part of his body. The wound proved to be fatal, marking the first homicide in Albany for that year.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a swift response from the Albany Police Department. Their investigation quickly pointed to a suspect, 33-year-old Eugene Marcus Grant III of Columbus. Authorities issued a lookout for Grant, cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous. It was reported that Grant fled the scene with his girlfriend, 34-year-old Ebony Millsaps, possibly in a silver 2010 Chrysler 300.
The search for Grant and Millsaps concluded the following day. In a turn of events, Grant chose to turn himself in to law enforcement in Lee County around 3 p.m. on Monday. Millsaps was also taken into custody for questioning. Following his surrender, Grant was transferred back to Albany to face investigators. He was subsequently processed at the Dougherty County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Tony Carter. For safety reasons, he was to be housed in Lee County. While Millsaps was questioned, no warrants had been issued for her arrest at the time of Grant's capture.
